Harai goshi (sweeping hip throw)
A defense for many hip throws is to step around or over your attackerâs hip. Harai goshi is used to prevent this escape. This is the third hip throw performed in the Nage no Kata, but the first where you stand on one foot. It is a powerful throw often used in free practice.
Uke is generally advancing or leaning towards his or her right front when harai goshi is applied, but it is a versatile throw that can be used when uke is moving in any direction. With your left hand on the sleeve, you can maintain a normal lapel grip, grab high on the collar, or grab under the arm at the back of the shoulder blade. Pull ukeâs right arm with determination so that uke puts most of his weight onto the right foot. As you enter for harai goshi you will continue this pull so that uke leans even further over the toes of the right foot.
You enter for this throw so you are supporting yourself on your left leg with your foot in front of and between ukeâs feet. Maintaining your balance on one leg is critical since your other leg must prevent uke from coming around you. Using your leg in a swinging motion, you sweep ukeâs right leg out from under him as you throw uke over your hip.
